
Math class often feels disconnected from the real world.
Students claim it is irrelevant, while teachers struggle to prove otherwise. However, one Texas educator has found a way to bridge that gap by tying math lessons to everyday lives, interests, and cultural backgrounds.
When Art Becomes Geometry
Last year, a group of middle schoolers in Austin did not believe math had anything to do with art. Their instructor took them to Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin, a stone chapel-like installation at the University of Texas. Inside, the group saw repeating patterns in the colored glass windows, precise angles in the totem-like structure, and a floor plan designed to manipulate light and shadow.
The visit turned into a project where students designed their own murals or soccer balls, applying concepts like translations, rotations, and dilations. Some drew, while others built physical models. The only rule was that their work had to reflect the geometry they had studied.
Sports, Recipes, and Real-World Math
Sports offer another entry point. Before the 2026 World Cup, students analyzed team performance data to predict outcomes. Younger kids compared shooting percentages or organized stats into pictographs. The educator used that energy to teach probability and data analysis.

Food also proved a natural fit. Students brought in family recipes, adjusting ingredient ratios for different group sizes. They calculated costs at local grocery stores, factoring in discounts and sales tax. Some even planned full meals for family gatherings, presenting their work during a “feast of learning” day. A few brought in samples—tamales, injera, biryani—turning the classroom into a potluck.
Financial literacy became another focus. Students explored simple and compound interest by setting savings goals for phones or calculating the long-term impact of student loans.
Culture Isn’t Just Holidays and Heroes
The shift toward culturally responsive teaching did not happen overnight. The educator started with surveys at the beginning of the year, asking students about their interests, traditions, and community ties. Parent nights helped fill in gaps. The goal was not to force math into unrelated topics but to find where it already existed, hidden in sports stats, recipe measurements, or the geometry of local architecture.
Such an approach doesn’t require grand gestures. A lesson on ratios can start with a family recipe. A unit on probability can use data from a favorite sport. The key is to meet students where they are, not where a textbook assumes they should be.
