Among South African institutions, the University of Pretoria (UP) has secured the top spot for employer reputation, according to the 2027 QS World University Rankings. This recognition highlights the university’s ability to prepare graduates for a shifting economy, particularly as youth unemployment remains a persistent issue across the continent. UP houses the country’s sole Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Gordon Institute of Business Science, a business school widely regarded on the African continent.
The Faculty of Veterinary Science plays a critical role not only within South Africa but across the wider continent, underpinning the veterinary sector’s supply chain and contributing to animal health, food security and public health outcomes. The Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) is consistently cited as one of Africa’s most respected business schools, attracting senior executives and supporting entrepreneurial ecosystems that feed directly into the region’s economic growth.
Strategic Vision and Academic Performance
The university strengthened its global ranking from 362 to 326 in the latest assessment. UP improved its standing in seven of the nine QS performance indicators, showing progress across multiple areas rather than relying on a single strength. Professor Francis Petersen, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, attributes this success to Thrive UP 2038, the university’s long-term strategic vision. The plan focuses on developing adaptable and socially conscious graduates who are digitally capable.
Thrive UP 2038 emphasizes the cultivation of future-fit graduates who can handle complex, interconnected markets. Its pillars include supporting adaptability, encouraging social consciousness, nurturing entrepreneurial mind-sets, and ensuring that every student graduates with strong digital fluency, thereby aligning academic outcomes with the evolving demands of global employers.
International Research Network is another key area of strength for the institution, which climbed to 23rd globally, up from 26. This ranking reflects decades of investment in research excellence and international collaboration. Globally, UP also ranks in the top 250 for Employment Outcomes, Employer Reputation, and Sustainability. The 23rd position places the university among the top 250 institutions worldwide in this specific metric, a result of sustained effort in research and societal impact.
In addition to the International Research Network position, UP is placed 159th in Employment Outcomes, 219th in Employer Reputation and 220th in Sustainability. These figures illustrate that graduates not only secure jobs quickly but also that employers consistently value the skills and competencies cultivated at UP, while the university’s sustainability initiatives are recognised as advancing environmental stewardship on a global scale.
Support for Graduates
Financial support remains a central pillar of UP’s operations. In 2026, the university provided assistance to 58% of the 2,154 students who graduated during the Spring ceremonies, which took place from 31 August to 4 September. Earlier that year, during the Autumn graduation season, 48.4% of the 13,221 graduates received similar aid. The university has maintained this level of support for many years, recognizing that education costs extend beyond tuition to include nutrition and psychosocial needs.
The assistance program is deliberately designed to address holistic student wellbeing.
UP’s reputation for social responsibility is evident in its domestic rankings. It also ranks fourth for Academic Reputation and International Students. The university continues to pursue its goal of joining the world’s leading institutions while maintaining a focus on creating societal impact.
Beyond the domestic accolades, UP also holds a position within the top 350 globally for International Faculty (337th, up from 404) and Academic Reputation (349th, up from 381). These rankings reflect the growing diversity and quality of the university’s teaching staff, as well as the positive perception of its research and teaching excellence among scholars worldwide.
Globally, the university also ranks in the top 250 in ‘International Research Network’ (number 23, up from 26), ‘Employment Outcomes’ (159 from 180), ‘Employer Reputation’ (219 from 221) and ‘Sustainability’ (220 from 168).
