Khan Academy has launched a new integration, embedding its AI-powered teaching assistant, Khanmigo, into iteach, a non-university teacher certification program accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The tool will be accessible to every participant in iteach, assisting them with AI-driven lesson planning, curriculum design, and professional advancement.
This collaboration responds to rising calls for AI proficiency in education. Research from the National 4-H Council shows that 72% of students seek better AI guidance, while about one-third of K-12 educators already incorporate AI into instruction. Built on Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, Khanmigo remains in beta testing but prioritizes reducing teacher workloads while promoting ethical AI practices.
iteach serves 1,550 U.S. school districts and stands as the only CAEP-accredited alternative certification program outside traditional universities. The AI tool will support candidates throughout their certification and extend access to a “knowledge refresh” feature for already-certified educators.
Andrew Rozell, president of iteach, said: “Through iteach’s partnership with Khan Academy, new teachers will enter the classroom with confidence, ready to educate students on the ethical use of AI and take advantage of this powerful technology to ease their own workloads, which we all know is often overwhelming.”
Kristen DiCerbo, chief learning officer at Khan Academy, said: “Through this partnership, Khanmigo will equip aspiring iteach educators with their own personal teaching assistant. When they enter the classroom as credentialed teachers, they’ll be able to put AI to use to streamline prep and focus on spending quality time with students.”
The beta phase indicates continued development, but its placement within a major certification program marks a deliberate move to embed AI education from the outset of a teaching career. All preservice teachers with iteach will have access to Khanmigo throughout their certification process.
School districts partnering with iteach will now have direct access to AI-assisted training, bridging a gap between emerging technology and educator preparation. The program’s expansion into AI literacy reflects broader industry shifts toward equipping teachers with digital skills before they enter classrooms.
